Sea Change is the eighth studio album by American musician Beck, released on September 24, 2002 by Geffen Records. Recorded over a two-month period in Los Angeles with producer Nigel Godrich, the album features themes of heartbreak and desolation, solitude, and loneliness. For the album, much of Beck's trademark cryptic and ironic lyrics were replaced by simpler, more sincere lyrical content. He also eschewed the heavy sampling of his previous albums for live instrumentation. Beck cited the breakup. On Sea Change, Beck sounds intentionally world-weary, but it's the songs themselves that sound labored. Is it no longer enough for Beck to write profound, genre-bending tunes that stand on their own Does he really need the crutch of suffocating overproduction and bold strokes of orchestration to shock us into caring again. Given how much soul-searching obviously went into this record, it's distressing how little soul the finished product actually has. If there's anything the self-absorbed murk of Sea Change illustrates with unmistakable clarity, it's that Beck has forgotten how to connect with his inner loser- and it's nobody's fault but his own. Sea Change. Released September 24, 2002. Sea Change Tracklist. The Golden Age Lyrics. Though Sea Change has become a quite common expression, the title of the album could also be a direct reference to Shakespeares play The Tempest, in which the character Ariel sings: Full fathom five thy father lies: Of his bones are coral made: Those are pearls that were his eyes: Nothing of him that doth fade But doth suffer a sea-change Into something rich and strange. Sea Change Q&A. Californian pacesetter Beck was 32 when he recorded Sea Change, and reviewers enthused that theyd never heard him write and perform with such maturity. When Beck stepped boldly into the 21st century with the album he released in 2002, reviewers enthused that theyd never heard him write and perform with such maturity. The Californian pacesetter was now 32 years old, with nearly a decade of recording experience under his belt, and was unveiling the next title in uDiscover Musics album-by-album narrative, Sea Change. In this album however, there is a different side of singer-songwriter Beck as opposed to Beck the sonic contortionist. It's a more emotional on his voice and his acoustic guitar. Despite the frequent use of an songs on this album are so incredibly naked and 's hard to believe it's the same guy who wrote Where It's At or Sexxx Laws. Exclusive discount for Prime members. I've loved Beck for years now and own nearly all of his albums that I can get my hands on in order to help support him. When it came to legitimately owning Sea Change, an album I've loved for years but never owned in a physical format, I wanted a better quality than a CD quality recording could give. I'm not a vinyl guy, so hi-res digital is the way to go for me. First, a bit about my quest to actually find this

I just saw this record made the discogs SADDEST records of all time list. What's even sadder about Sea Change is a fews later Jeremy Blake (who did the album artwork) stripped down naked and swam out into the Hudson River only to drowned himself and die. Even sadder, his wife committed suicide a week prior. Damn.
Mine has a HDCD layer. Sounds ethereal. I believe all copies of this release have the HDCD; but there is no mention I can see on the disc or packaging; my player shows the disc or file type. I've played the red book layer on a "superior" cd player and much prefer the HDCD!
I have the Canadian 2002 CD which I thought was regular, but Foobar2k with the plugin says it is HDCD. No labels or anything though.
This album sounds kind of like Beck just doing his folk-country thing at first, you're like, "cool. this is a bit different."Then you lose someone close to you, have a breakup, or any other number of terrible things.. THIS is where the impact of this record is felt the most. It takes a lot for me to cry but "Lost Cause" can get me crying like a little girl if I'm sad enough. The track "It's All in Your Mind" dates back to 1993-94 (when Beck did his "One Foot in the Grave" record, which is for the most part very similar to this one, and my favorite album of his), but it appears here, rewritten and honestly much better. Just put on "Lonesome Tears" after the love you thought would last forever gets destroyed, and be ready to weep. A lot. This is an extremely emotive record, and my ex hated when I would put it on when I was depressed, as she couldn't handle it. This isn't a radio-friendly "two turntables and a microphone" kind of record. This is a straight-out BROKEN man putting his feelings to tape. The production is amazing, done by Nigel Godrich (who is famous for his work with Radiohead, and he did Beck's album before this one, "Mutations"). The string arrangements really hit you close to home, and are usually what gets me crying. This record is absolutely amazing. 11/10.

Not a fan of Beck but this one - woaah - amazing! Loved it. It's a singer-songwriter album with beautiful instrumental renderings. Perfect album. Can't say the same about Morning Phase - that was overly crafted, wary and boring. Sea Change is 5/5.
