Brewster's Rooster is an album by English saxophonist John Surman with guitarist John Abercrombie, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and bassist Drew Gress recorded in 2007 and released on the ECM label. This studio band is as sympathetic as his working road unit, and his willingness to place the tradition in the context of his more contemporary, sometimes ambiguous harmonic. Brewster's Rooster. While we know that Surman's got considerable form with drummer Jack DeJohnette and guitarist John Abercrombie, but it's still fascinating to hear his first forays with bassist Drew Gress. It's Gress' first recording for ECM and he acquits himself marvelously. The quartet gel instantly over both some mournful sketches and playful jousts, mostly from Surman's pen, though the exceptions actually prove to be two of the highlights. John Warren's Slanted Sky is a wonderfully reflective piece where Surman uses his soprano to paint a melancholy portrait over Abercrombie&a. This item:Brewster's Rooster by Jack DeJohnette Audio CD . Brewster's Rooster is the first ECM recording for New York double-bassist Drew Gress, who has also played in Abercrombie's band. While the usual naysayers will grumble about the ages of the players or that the music is not intense enough, this album will undoubtably be among the best ECM releases of this decade
