The first Wray album I bought was Link Wray and his Wraymen, which listed Rumble as a track actually, two tracks, as it was also a bonus track as an alternate take. It was, in fact, a different track called Ramble, which was released as follow-up to Rumble. I believe it was intentionally mislabelled by the label, who probably did not own the rights to Wray's biggest hit. I am old enough to remember Link Wray's 'Rumble' of 1958. He fell under the radar after 1960 but recorded some great music thereafter. Link Wray might have been the initiator of the 'guitar band' era - followed by Dick Dale, the Ventures -- although he did a few vocals. Rumble is an instrumental by American group Link Wray & His Ray Men. Released in the United States on March 31, 1958, as a single with The Swag as a B-side, Rumble utilized the techniques of distortion and feedback, then largely unexplored in rock and roll. The single is the only instrumental ever banned from radio in the United States. It is also one of the first tunes to use the power chord, the major modus operandi of the modern rock guitarist.
