Slave Vows, as an album, struggles at times to get out of its entrenchment into its own sound. There simply isn't enough variety within tracks to justify the track lengths, and the songs themselves are a bit too similar to keep the album from feeling stale at times. Still, this record is a testament to rock music and easily worth a few listens. Jake's Track Picks: 4. Dead Body 6. City Job 7. Laying Down For The Man. Slave Vows is the fifth studio album by Los-Angeles hardcore punk band The Icarus Line. It was released in August 2013 under Agitated Vows happens to be a polar opposite: structured songs have been replaced by much noisier and more experimental jams that let the quartet delve into full-fledged psychedelia on many occasions. The hypnotic aggression that's in full swing here sits remarkably well with The Icarus Lines usually frenetic standards. In fact, the majority of eight songs on Slave Vows works as a textbook definition of how to build and release tension. Opener Dark Circles is an 11-minute psych-drone epic that kicks off with a menacing trail of feedback, then gradually evolves into a narcotic beat, only to settle in the decadent blues in the latter half. The bad-boys of internet 1. 0, the Icarus Line, have abandoned the nü-romanticBirthday Partyshoegaze sexiness of their last few records and have dove headfirst into broken glass for something a little more feral and fanged. Fifth album Slave Vows welcomes you to the Funhouse, with seven- and 10-minute long dirges that cycle with crusted-over riffs, desperate yowls, interminable drones, and at least one song that devolves into the type of Albert Ayler-fueled noise breakdowns beloved by the Stooges and MC5. Slave Vows is - easily the finest guitar album The Icarus Line have produced since Aaron North precariously sprinted across a row of trembling amps to crash out the window and join Nine Inch Nails in 2005. Full Review. An eminently powerful work of rock n roll from start to finish, Slave Vows hasnt saved the soul of rock music, but it sure as hell has revitalized it
